Definition of Downcycling

What is Downcycling?

Downcycling is the process of converting unwanted materials into new products generally of lesser quality and functionality. Downcycling prevents materials that are still useful from entering landfills and reduces the need to consume new materials. Downcycling has many environmental benefits including reduced energy consumption, industrial pollution and overall greenhouse gas emissions.
