How to Naturally Whiten Clothes

A Non-toxic Recipe for Clothes Whitening

Keeping your whites gleaming without chemicals like sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) and benzene doesn’t have to be as challenging as you might think. Whether you choose commercially-available natural bleach or want to make your own homemade bleach, there are plenty of ways to make your wash-up habits as eco-friendly as possible. These recipes for alternatives to bleach for whitening clothes should have you brightening your laundry in no time at all:

  • Hydrogen peroxide: As a natural killer of mold, mildew, and odors, hydrogen peroxide will also act as a natural bleach. Use directly on stains or soak laundry in diluted hydrogen peroxide for a few hours before running the washing machine.
  • Lemon juice: Pour one cup of lemon juice into a bucket of water and soak your whites overnight then launder as normal.
  • Washing soda: Depending on the size of the load, you can add up to one cup of washing soda to every load of wash to boost the whitening power of your natural laundry detergent.
