The Natural Ingredients You'll Need to Make an Eco-Friendly Home Cleaning Kit

Whether you’re a cleaning freak or just someone looking for ways to maintain a decently clean home using natural cleaning products, why not put together a natural home cleaning kit. Sure, blending your own eco-friendly cleaning supplies may seem a bit daunting at first, but once you get to know how simple the basic ingredients are and the infinite ways you can combine them to accomplish almost any cleaning job. In fact, nontoxic cleaning using your own natural cleaning recipes and a few green cleaning supplies, will give you the satisfaction that you’re protecting your family’s health and making the planet a little less toxic.

 

Natural cleaning ingredients 

While there are about six powerhouse ingredients (note those with “*”) that you’ll see used over and over again, there are variations on many natural cleaning recipes using a variety of different safe and effective things. Here’s a pretty comprehensive list of what you may find:

  • Baking soda*
  • Borax*
  • Castile soap*
  • Cedar chips
  • Club soda
  • Cola
  • Citrus oils such as grapefruit seed extract
  • Cornstarch
  • Cream of tartar
  • Essential oils like cedar, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, tea tree, or lemon
  • Glycerin
  • Grapefruit seed extract
  • Hydrogen peroxide*
  • Ice
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Lemon or lime juice and their peels
  • Oils - olive, vegetable, linseed (food grade from the health food store)
  • Salt
  • Washing soda*
  • White vinegar (distilled if possible)*

Using the above cleaning ingredients, you’ll be able to mix together natural cleaning products like natural all purpose cleaner, nontoxic wood floor cleaner, eco-friendly carpet deodorizer, green toilet bowl cleaner, safe glass and window cleaner, simple mold remover, and natural oven cleaner, to name a few. 

 

Basic cleaning supplies 

You may also want to stock your natural home cleaning kit with a few other eco cleaning supplies such as the following:

  • 2-4 glass jars
  • 4-6 spray bottles
  • Cotton cloths/rags
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Toothbrush

Put it all together in a carrying cart or rubber bin to making cleaning your home convenient and low-maintenance.
